My Topiary DIY

Kendra suggested that a topiary would be a perfect addition to our family room decor.  I liked the idea, so I started pricing them at on-line stores.
This definitely was not what Kendra had in mind!  She brought me two vases which she had taken the time to paint in white and gold to match our frames colors.

they turned out so pretty!

I purchased a few other things, and got ready to give it a try.  Apart from the sticky fingers and a messy work surface, the topiary turned out better than I thought it would.

My supplies:
Kendra's repurposed vases
a dowel
foam ball ~ a green one would have made things easier!
Spanish moss
sheet moss
spray adhesive
lots of paper to work on ~ definitely a messy job!

What I did:
I added tissue paper to the inside of the vase ~ this really helped to keep the dowel steady. A small piece of flower foam would have even been better.

I measure the dowel and inserted it into the foam ball.  I did need to cut some of the dowel to get the height I needed.  When I removed the dowel, I marked the hole on the ball so that I could find it again (and so I won't end up covering it with moss)!

Then the messy fun part started.  I sprayed the adhesive onto the ball in small sections and added portions of the Spanish moss.

Once the entire ball was covered, I looked for spots that I had missed.  I also found that I needed to add additional adhesive to the moss that did not flatten when I pressed on it.

Once I was satisfied, I again inserted the dowel into the hole and wedged it tightly into the vase.  I added sheet moss to cover the tissue paper.
And put my finished product on display!

love the way it coordinates with my Pottery Barn birdhouse!

That vase looks amazing! Love the gold, and it does coordinate well with the birdhouse. I just started my blog and would love for you to stop by!

It's so cute! I like that the vases have the pop of gold instead of being just white. It's a nice detail!
