An Appliqued "Home" Pillow DIY

I have been looking for a lumbar pillow to accent my brown leather sofa ~ without success!  My only solution was to create my own.  The process was extremely simple, and the results were just what I wanted!

Supplies for an 16" x 26" envelope backed pillow:

17" x 27" ~ 1 piece for front~ cotton fabric (I used Michael Miller's Soft White Cotton)
17" x 17 1/2" ~ 2 pieces for back ~ cotton fabric
1/4 yard piece of colored cotton ( I used black)
"Home" template 1
              template 2
Heat n Bond Ultrahold
16" x 26" pillow insert

Process:
Pillow front:
Print both sections of the "home" template
Trace the "home" template following the directions on the back of the Heat n Bond package
The template is in reverse letter order.  Don't change!
Since the script is on 2 separate pages, be careful to line up the letters evenly overlapping the "o"
       and the "m"

Iron the letters to the back of your colored cotton fabric, allow to cool, and cut out.
Peel off the paper liner.
Center the "home" on the 17" x 27" fabric piece, press until it securely attaches.
Using a zig zag or blanket stitch, sew around each letter.

Pillow back:
Turn under 1/2" along the width of one of the back pieces (17" side) Press.

Turn under an additional 1 1/2" and press.

Repeat for the remaining back piece.
Topstitch along the folded edges.

With right sides together, line up your two back pieces on top of the front piece overlapping the folded edges.

Pin, and sew a 1/2" seam around the entire rectangle ~ sew slowly and carefully where the fabrics overlap.

Clip corners, and turn right-side out.  I use a chop stick to push out the corners.

Press, and add your insert ~ and you have a beautiful new accent pillow!

Nautical Decor

And once again the Northeast is being hit with a winter storm ~ this time it is an icy mix!  All of the rain (and puddles) made me think of the shore and lovely nautical decorating ideas ~ with a WISH that summer will be here soon!

How fun is this bathtub created to look like a rowboat...

...with rope used as a stairway accent...

...add a wood carved anchor...

...and a headboard made of oars...

...and complete the look with a compass ceiling to "lead the way"
And the perfect nautical look is complete!  ♥

Easy Table Runner

"Cabin Fever" ~ this frigid weather has really curtailed outdoor activity!  I keep looking for projects to do inside the house.  When I happened to see this modern geometric fabric, I thought it would make a great new table runner for my kitchen.

Table runners are a great way to add color, but they can be expensive.  The perfect option is to do it yourself.

My finished project~

Supplies needed:
1 1/2 yards of two fabrics ~ one for the top and one for the lining
Thread
Sewing machine

Initially I was planning to use matching brown fabric for my lining, but I thought it might show through.  As a result, I change to white.

Cutting:
I needed to add 1/2" to both the width and the length.  My table is 70" long, and I wanted a few inches of table showing at each end.  I cut my two fabrics 62 1/2" x 17 1/2"  ~ allowing for 1/4" seams.

Sewing:
I pinned the fabrics right sides together.

Using white thread, I sewed a 1/4" seam around all the edges, leaving about a 3" opening on one of the short ends.

I trimmed the corners and turned the fabric right side out.  Using a chopstick, I pushed out the seams and ironed carefully.  I wanted all of my seams to line up as perfectly as possible.

I changed my top thread to brown (but left white in the bobbin).  I top stitched a 1/4 from all the edges (carefully folding in the seam allowance on the section that was left open).

Press again, and  ~ my new table runner! ♥
