Sewing with my Granddaughter

I was beyond thrilled when my granddaughter showed an interest in sewing and asked for a sewing machine! And, of course, I couldn't wait until she visited so that we could begin a project together.

We decided on an apron and chef's hat for her American girl doll.  She picked fabrics from my stash, and we were ready to begin.

It was such fun to work with her, and our project turned out perfectly!

Pinterest provides many beginning ideas for children learning to use a machine ~ here and here.

Super Hero Pillowcase

I had made each of the girls an outfit for their dolls ~ now I needed to find something special for my grandson........

Cole likes super heroes, so I had purchased this cute Marvel Comic fabric awhile ago, but I didn't have a plan for it.

My solution ~ a pillowcase with an appliquéd super hero!

Although it is a little more expensive, I always use organic fabric for pillowcases, especially for kids.

I used the burrito style pattern with French seams and added my appliqué....

...and it was finished in no time!
I hope he likes it!

I used the same technique when I made a Lego pillowcase for a friend.

A "Super" Room for My Special "Super Hero"

Wow, time is going by so quickly.  My grandson has outgrown his "Cozy Owl Hideaway" and now has a bedroom filled with his favorite Super Heroes.

From a large Superman decal to super hero books to super hero action figures, it is everything our little guy could want.  Emily decorated it with all of the details to make bright and fun ...a room that would attract any member of the  League of Justice!

I added a cross stitch sampler of all the heroes from "A" to "Z."

And a custom pillow...

His parents added the love...

....and Cole added the action...

Watch out Enemies of the Justice League!  ♥

Note:  Cross stitch pattern is available here.

"Don't Let the Pigeons Drive the Bus" Pouf

My grandchildren LOVE the stories by Mo Willems! One of their nighttime favorites is "Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus" about  a very feisty pigeon who has children and parents telling it "no!" while also secretly rooting for it to succeed.

So when I realized that Cloud9 had created an organic line of fabrics based on the stories, I knew it was a purchase I had to make!

What would be better than sewing up a pouf just right for relaxing while reading ~

I basically used the same technique that I had posted here.  But in place of the store bought piping, I made my own.  The "stripe in teal" was so cute that I had to include it!

I cut the teal piece on the bias so that the stripes would be on a diagonal.  From then on the procedure was the same.

Think the pigeon would be happy with the results too! ♥

Template for "Out to Sea" Sailboat Dress

Several people have asked for more details about the dress I made using Sarah Jane's "Out to Sea" fabric.  Here are additional information & template for the sailboat ~ hope it helps!

The dress:

The pattern:
I used Lily Bird Studio's Birthday Party dress pattern.  It is an instant pdf file.

Although they are cute, I eliminated the ruffles for my dress.

Fabric:
For the dress:  Anchors Away in Navy (1 yard)
For the lining, belt, button covers:  Pirate Stripe in Raspberry (1/2 yard)

Template for the appliqued sailboat

Found Friday - Summer Fun Activities for Kids

Our weekend at the shore was fun, but the weather did not permit trips to the beach.  As a result, four little toddlers needed to be kept entertained.  So I thought it would be a good idea to have an array of activities ready for the future ~ as they say: "It is better to be prepared!"

Here are a few that I am going to add to my "Busy Box":

Sponge Bombs ~ I think the adults would enjoy this one too (:

Water Pistol fun ~ get ready for the arcade!

Ice Excavating ~ a great way to keep cool too!

A pretty play puddle ~ Layla would love this!

And, of course, bubbles ~ the bigger the better!

Hope you found a few favorites too!  ♥
