Super Hero Pillowcase

I had made each of the girls an outfit for their dolls ~ now I needed to find something special for my grandson........

Cole likes super heroes, so I had purchased this cute Marvel Comic fabric awhile ago, but I didn't have a plan for it.

My solution ~ a pillowcase with an appliquéd super hero!

Although it is a little more expensive, I always use organic fabric for pillowcases, especially for kids.

I used the burrito style pattern with French seams and added my appliqué....

...and it was finished in no time!
I hope he likes it!

I used the same technique when I made a Lego pillowcase for a friend.

A Mix of Old & New, Neon & Natural - Hadley's Big Girl Room

Hi there and happy Monday!! So this post has been a long time coming.  I started collecting items for Hadley's big girl room while she was still just a baby. If I saw something that I knew would work I bought and then I hid it - in a big closet in our guest room.  That closet filled up over the course of a year, and it was great to finally pull it all out (some that I had actually forgotten about!) and get to work making her small nursery into a vibrant and happy big girl room just for her!

Hadley has the smallest bedroom in the house. Sometimes it feels like it's half the size of Layla's so I wanted to make up for the lack of square footage by incorporating comfy textiles, super bight colors, fun wall art and plenty of open space for playing.

My color palette for her room started with neon pink, gold and white.  I went back and forth about changing the colors of her walls from sky blue to bright white but decided to embrace the blue  (I do still love it) and just add a few more colors into the mix.  Enter Oh Joy's Spring party line for Target.

I used a ton of her party supplies for Layla's fifth birthday and then again for Hadley's third, so I had lots of pretty leftovers to work with, along with some wall dots that I bought knowing the would look good somewhere. Well, the colors (coral, green, yellow) helped balance out my original palette perfectly.  Using the dot decals on just one wall made it more special and didn't cluttered up the rest of the walls which I thought would make the room feel smaller and too uniform.  I also used one the Oh Joy flower garlands to hang over her bed, and we love hanging  her party hats from door knobs and filling them with tissue flowers.

Next was on my list was bedding.  I had already gotten sheets for her bed and I had my mom make the gorgeous hot pink heart sham but I was having troubling finding a quilt I liked.  I had wanted to use a vintage quilt but couldn't find one that was both the colors I wanted and the size I needed.  So I decided to make my first and only real splurge and had a quilt custom made.

I had worked with Janice from La Rue de Fleurs on two other quilt projects so I knew she would do a wonderful job creating the design I wanted with the fabrics I had picked out.  Well, to say she surpassed my expectations would be an understatement.  The quilt is not only well made and super soft, but it's the perfect mix of traditional and modern.  Just what I wanted and I love it!

As for the furnishings in the room, the Peacock-style headboard was something I had always wanted to use in one of my girls' rooms.  I love the bohemian style of the natural rattan and the scrolly design is so feminine and pretty.  Again, I tried to go the vintage route but the ones on Etsy and even Craigslist were out of my price range. So when I found this one at Urban Outfitters last year on sale, I scooped it up.

One of my favorite parts of designing this room was picking out artwork and creating the gallery wall.  Hadley's wall has mix of Etsy artists, family photos, and her own artwork - along with pages torn out of coloring books and catalogues.  The huge Martha Stewart paper flowers add dimension while the hanging mirror adds depth and light.  Side note: the Love poster on the floor was placed there while I was coming up with the layout (and to cover an outlet) but once I stood back and looked at everything I decided it would stay right where it is...acrylic frame so no risk of breaking plus it covers that outlet beautifully!!

The side table is from Target - I got it right before it sold out.  The bookshelf is the same just backed with a different fabric and completely restyled.

Her dresser was actually Scott's childhood dresser (I painted it white) with pulls from my childhood dresser.  I love that she has a little piece of us, when we were her age, in her room.

The wicker chair was a thrift store find and the floor mirror was from Craigslist.  I made the cradle out of the table that was in Hadley's nursery and will do a before and after post about that another day!

So there you have it, Hadley's sweet little room made especially for her.

Later this week I'll share a more complete source list for most of the things in her room.  And will prepare a tutorial or two as well!
Thanks for looking!!

Mo Willems ~ "A Custom Pigeon Pillow"

I have yet to find a child who is not hooked on the Mo Willem's series of Pigeon books.  And, as a former English teacher, I know how important it is to read for pleasure at any age!

When Cloud 9 came out with their organic pattern line, I couldn't wait!
I first made "reading poufs" for my grandchildren (diy available here).

And when Kendra asked me to make a custom personalized pillow for her sweet friend Belinda's daughter (a big Mo Willem's fan), I knew just what I would do.  The outside panels would be in two print which would boarder white fabric ~ perfect for personalization.

The cording would then be in the striped fabric cut on the bias.
No, I wasn't finished ~ our birthday girl, Glen Lake, needed the pigeon himself ~ so I cut pieces for the applique and sewed him on!

The end result was just what I wanted...

...and I am thrilled with how the colors work in a beautiful little girl's bedroom!

Hope you enjoy!  ♥ Pin It

Decorative Sheet Set DIY

Wow, the cool autumn air has inspired (or refreshed) me to do some new decorating!  My newest project is one of our guest rooms.  I decided to go with pink and gray and a pop of navy ~ really into those colors now.
I wanted to keep the sheets white to go with the white furniture, but they seems so plain.  A decorative stitch was the way to spruce them up.

First, I measured the cuff on the pillowcases, and drew a line with a water soluble pen at the half way point.  For me it was 2 1/2 inches.

Using the line as my guide, I picked a decorative stitch from my sewing machine.  I did experiment with several until I found the one I liked.  Then I stitched.

I repeated the process with the top sheet, and voilà ~ I have a pretty new set of sheets! ♥

Our Bedroom - The Other Side

Hello there!  I shared a few photos of our bedroom's progress a few months ago and thought I'd share a few from the other side today.

The photo below is the view from my side of the bed.  I have to say I LOVE waking to all these lovely things with the sun streaming through the window - it makes me want to stay in bed all day!

I made a hanging plant holder with some pink and white nylon rope, two candle holders and air plants.
I'll post a tutorial about this next week.

The mirror!  The wall opposite our needed something large and bold so when I saw this tealy blue hand carved mirror at Pier 1 I knew it would be perfect.  And the fact that it was a floor model they were trying to get rid of (at a huge discount) sealed the deal!

We bought two Malm dressers and pushed them together to create one super long dresser.  I love how modern they are and that they don't have pulls or knobs so they blend right into the space.

Below is the little corner next to the dresser.  I found the vintage marquee number 4 on Etsy and the rest of the art is from Minted and Etsy.

The two vintage wooden egg cup girls (inside the 4) were a gift from my mom - one reminds me of Layla and the other Hadley: )

You'll see below that I took an eyesore basic black digital alarm clock and made it modern by putting it into a cardboard gift box that I had spray painted white.  I made the stripe design with yellow washi tape.

Lots more art, photos and a branch that I wrapped in washi tape.

Below is a shot of Scott's nightstand.

Happy colors and patterns!

Easy Airplane Art

Hello!  So, I had these little airplanes left over from Layla's Valentine's day cards.  For the last month, I had been wanting to switch out the snake print or (more accurately) a page ripped out of the Cabinet of Natural Curiosities book on our bedroom dresser.  I thought these colorful planes would be the perfect pick me up this spot needed.

I had the frame, the planes and the map - swiped from our car's glove compartment - who needs a map when you have a built GPS and an iPhone - right?  Well that's what I think at least, we'll see what Scott has to say when he discovers it's missing!

First I measured the framed and cut a coordinating piece of the map and lined the inside.  Then, using white school glue, I attached 8 planes directly onto the glass front.

And here's how it looks on the dresser in our bedroom.  I still have more photos to share of this room and some updates to this post from last month - so be on the lookout!

And just in case you were wondering, the braid print is from here, the cardboard moose here, the buffalo photograph from here and Mr. Moose's bow tie is actually a Janie & Jack hair bow Layla received as a gift for her first birthday - I think he looks smashing in it!

Have a happy weekend!

Back - Kinda, Sorta

Hello All! I don't know about you but I get a little blue after all the holiday festivities are over...I think it's the whole not having much to look forward.  The winter brings us (along with cold dreary weather) Scott's annual "tax season" which means he's working six days a week and longer hours a day which translates to less Daddy time for the girls and less couple time for us.  So I've been feeling a bit blah and not really inspired to post anything lately...but today I decided (late of course) that I would share two before and after shots of our pretty much finished bedroom.  I mentioned being almost ready to share it about a dozen times but today I found the pix and think they are blog ready.  I'll add more and post details another day.
