Creativity Fun Things to Do with Legos

My grandchildren love legos  ~ building castles and super heroes are our favorites.  But I never realized the incredible ideas that have been created using those little plastic objects.

How about a legos for your kitchen utensils....

... or a lego key holder...

....or perhaps a soap dispenser floating with colorful legos...

...for my patient friends ~ a lego quilt...

...or for those who just can't get enough... a lego kitchen island...

... and for me when the grandkids leave....

Hope that you found something interesting!  ♥

Pinterest Challenge ~ Fabric Bulletin Board DIY

I have resolved to keeping myself more organized!  With so many fabric samples for my Etsy shop lying around, my desk was becoming a little chaotic.  Where to go for ideas ~ why Pinterest, of course!
There were so many great samples ~ from wine cork boards to picture frame boards.
Since I wanted something simple and functional, I just decided on a cork board covered with fabric and a little ribbon.
It was an easy and inexpensive project!

I purchased a 14" 14" cork board from Joann's (approx. $3.00).

Next, a fabric ~ I choose this blue chevron from Spoonflower, which I cut into a 16 1/2" x 16 1/2" square.

To be sure that the print kept straight while it was stapled, I first taped it with blue painter's tape.

Then stapled...

I added 1" white ribbon to the bottom; it allowed me to clip items as well as using pins (and it looks pretty too)!

The final result~

Computer Challenge - wordmark.it

Yes, once again I am changing our normal Friday Pinterest Challenge to a Computer Challenge!  I am always looking for new modern fonts to use in my personalized pillows.  Normally I go to a web site such as Dafont.com to test fonts that would work as appliques.

Well, when I found wordmark.it, I was amazed.  You just type in a word, and a myriad of fonts using your word appear.

I typed in the name of my Etsy shop, and here is just an example of what instantly appeared~

just one of 17 pages of fonts!
The site picks up the fonts that are saved on your computer and allows you to see all of them at once.
There are so many options.  You can select to use all caps, all lower case, or a combination of the two.
In addition, the program allows you to pick the size of the font and a negative background.

all caps!

Hope you enjoy as much as I have!  Have a wonderful and "warm" weekend!  ♥

Paint Like Jackson Pollock

On Fridays we try to write about a DIY project from Pinterest that we have attempted to complete.  But today my post is actually a Facebook Challenge.

My friend and talented artist Nancy always seems to find fun photos or activities to share.  This one ~ http://manetas.com/Pollock/ had me hooked right away!

MY CREATION

Jackson Pollock's art:

Jackson Pollock, an American painter, is known for his "drip" style art.  So even though I am definitely not an artist, I had fun trying to copy his style.

Directions:
Go to http:manetas.com/Pollock
Press any key to get a different color
Press SPACE to erase
Press ALT and any key to change the color of the drip.  Numbers 1-0 also change the color.

Be creative, and have fun!

Thank you, Nancy, for my newest obsession! ♥

Pinterest Challenge ~ "Love" tea towel

I always seem to need new kitchen towels!  And I love the colorful styles that are available, but they can be expensive especially when they need to be washed so frequently.

When I happened across Somewhat Simple's tutorial, I couldn't resist!

The directions were clearly written and easy to follow...

...and the tea towel came together quickly!

Besides the fabric, the only thing I changed was the stitching around the appliques.  Rather than straight stitches, I used small zig zag.   I thought that it might help reduce fraying since mine get washed so often.

I love the way the finished towel looks in my kitchen!

Enjoy!  ♥

Pinterest Challenge - Pottery with Sculpey Clay

Sculpey clay was a new product for me.  And since I had never taken a pottery class, the idea of making clay items in the kitchen ~ no kiln necessary~ sounded fascinating.
Recently Kendra, Layla, and I were together and decided to give it a try.

Products needed:
Sculpey clay
lace to make your design (if you want to add texture)
a cookie cutter (Layla made a great bunny)
 rolling pin
 Silipat

What we did:
On a Silipat, we rolled out small pieces of the clay.  I learned not to roll it out less than 1/4"

We used small cup (Layla used a cookie cutter) to make our shapes.  We added the texture from the lace.

For a small jewelry bowl, we shaped the rounded piece into a shallow bowl.  Layla's bunny was kept flat.

We baked according to the directions on the package.
Once the pieces were cool, we removed them carefully.

Kendra added our small bowls to a bright and fun collage ~

And Layla's adorable bunny was framed and included on a new gallery wall.

It would be a fun project to use with children, and the finished products would make great gifts.

Happy Weekend! ♥

Pinterest Challenge Friday - Lemon Seed Plant

Hi!  So I was really intrigued by this pin about growing a lemon leaf plant from the seeds of lemons.  The pin mentioned that it smelled great (like lemons - surprise) and we had a bunch of lemons in the house so I thought I would give it a try.  I followed the instructions and used a pretty french jam jar as the planter.  The first sprout popped up about 2 weeks later!! Success!

Two weeks after planting.

Two months after planting!!

I love the way this little plant looks in the jar but I have to say it doesn't smell like lemons or anything else...oh well!  Pretty proud of myself anyway: )
Have a happy weekend!

Pinterest Challenge - Yard Sale Portrait Makeover

I mentioned last year that heading out to yard sales early on Saturday mornings, with my Dad as my wingman, has become one of my favorite summertime shore traditions.  I love looking for bargains and unique things and I think he gets a kick out of seeing the things I buy.  He's not normally a patient shopper but hitting up a few yard sales  (usually when the grandkids are on the verge of a meltdown) seems to suit him just fine.  I love taking him with me too because he doesn't judge my purchases or ask what I will do with them or where they will go (aka making me second guess myself - Mom and Scott) instead he usually does the opposite - whipping out a couple dollars to pay for my latest find!

Onto the title of this post.  I found, among a few other treasures, this portrait of a Native American girl over the Memorial Day weekend.  Yard sales were few and far between because of the rain but so were shoppers which was good for me!  I love portraits and this frame was really lovely but what drew me to this piece was the little girl's eyes.  They were haunting and sweet and vaguely familiar.  After bringing this back to Maryland my friend's Mom said they actually reminded her of my girls' eyes.  Bingo!

Trust me I did my research and found out that Artistic Interiors, the now defunct company who sold this type of art wholesale, provided inexpensive art for the many.   There isn't a high value or demand for this type of art anymore.   And I couldn't find any information about the artist.

Scott isn't a big fan of having people we don't know hanging on the walls in our home, which I understand but I knew this portrait needed to live in our house. So after a bit of brainstorming I remembered this popular pin from awhile back and thought this would be the perfect piece to try something similar out on.

I taped off the top half starting right below her eyes.

A couple of coats and I left it to dry in the sun.

Tape removed and 24 hours to "gas off" before coming inside.

I think this look perfect in our living room/kid's library.  That empty wall needed something to brighten it up and I think this little piece of art did the trick.  Except when Scott saw he said "great now I have a strange little girl peeking at me."  Oh well!  I love her: )

Have a wonderful day!!
xo!

Pinterest Challenge Friday - Cloud Pillow

I have wanted to try making a cloud pillow, so when I saw the diy on Sew4home.com, I just had to give it a try.

In place of using the minky eyelash fabric, I choose to go with the chenille that I often use for the pillows I sell on Etsy ~ just love the softness!

Since I couldn't find large graph paper, I made my own 1" square grid ~ and that did take me some time!

Next, I used the pattern provided on the site to make the 22" pillow.  Notice all of the erasure marks ~ guess graphing was never my strong point ):

Once that was done, I cut out the fabric ~ chenille for the front and a pretty blue cotton for the back.  Caution:  be sure to cut with right sides of the fabric together or your fabrics will be backwards when you put them together to sew.

I decided that my cloud needed a face, so I appliqued eyes, eyebrows, and a small smile.

I sewed the two sides together using a 1/2" seam leaving about 8" along the bottom for turning and stuffing.

I used a chopstick when I turned the fabric right side out to be sure to get all of the cloud's curves, and pressed.  Once I stuffed and slip stitched the bottom, I couldn't help smiling.

Love the finished product!  ♥
